The route leading to Everest will pass through a few small towns. Payang is one of them. The drivers were always on time; we arrived just at the time of lunch.

It was noon, the Tibetan air was thin; the sunlight was particularly strong. This kind of lighting quality is not suitable for landscape photography. A common saying in the photography community is: “The light is too harsh.”

However, as far as portraiture photography is concerned, if the subject was in the shade, the light becomes softer, just nice for portraiture photography at least that was how I have been shooting during this expedition.

There are a few children playing in front of the restaurant. I usually will have my camera with me; I put on the 85mm lens, and have the urge to photograph them.

The children are not timid when they see strangers, but are eager to try and become models.

For reasons I couldn’t comprehend, after shooting for a while, I couldn’t find the effect I was looking for. I was about to walk away when I spotted this kid in the picture.

He looked a little shy, wanting to participate but not daring to.

I pointed to the camera and made a gesture.

He hid behind the wall, but stuck his head out to peek at me.

When I approached, he hid again and peeked again a moment later.

I smiled and said to him, “Don’t be afraid, I only want to take a few pictures for you.”

He stopped hiding and stood there for me to photograph.

His clear gaze attracted me, flowing with confidence and innocence, and a light smile on his face. It was so pure.

There was no special posing; everything was so natural.

Twelve years had passed since the image was shot.

I wish I could meet this kid again someday.

I believe he is no longer a small boy; he should have grown up and become a handsome chap.
