The soil in this area as compared to other territory, contains high levels of iron and aluminum. The minerals slowly deposited through oxidation, gradually forming a dazzling color. The colors were especially rich and deep after the rain.
Dong Chuan Red Soil is located to the north east of Kunming City.
The best time to photograph at Red Soil is from mid-May to early June, and from September to December.
When the farmers grow potatoes and wheat during the summer months of May and June, this is the time when the crops are green and golden yellow, and couple with the red soils, making this the most colorful time.
From September to December, the white rapeseed flowers, unique to Yunnan, are in full bloom, and some of the red soils are planted with green barley and wheat, making for a particularly colorful mix of white, green and red.
In November, when it starts to snow in the red soils, some of the crops in the fields still maintain some color, and that is a different view.
In fact, different times in the Red Soil offer different times of scenery. If it rains, the land will take on a deeper red color, and if one is lucky, when a rainbow appears, or rainbows, it will be a dream image for every photographer.
